8 End-of-Year Activities for English Learners and Multilingual Students

As the school year comes to a close, many teachers are searching for meaningful ways to celebrate their students while still supporting learning. For English learners and multilingual students, the final weeks of school provide a valuable opportunity to reflect on growth, build confidence, strengthen language skills, and celebrate accomplishments.

The activities below are designed to support student voice, language development, and classroom community while creating lasting memories before summer break.

1. Letter to My Future Self

Invite students to write a letter to themselves that they can read next school year.

Students can reflect on:

  • What they learned this year

  • How their language skills have grown

  • Favorite memories

  • Goals for next year

Support students with sentence frames such as:

  • "One thing I learned this year was..."

  • "I am proud of..."

  • "Next year I hope to..."

2. Classroom Memory Museum

Students create displays featuring their favorite moments from the year.

Include:

  • Writing samples

  • Artwork

  • Projects

  • Photos

  • Academic accomplishments

Students can practice speaking skills by presenting their displays to classmates.

3. Compliment Circle

Create opportunities for students to celebrate one another through positive feedback and appreciation.

Sentence starters:

  • "I appreciate you because..."

  • "One thing I learned from you is..."

  • "You helped our class by..."

This activity promotes language development while strengthening classroom community.

4. One Word Reflection

Ask students to choose one word that represents their year.

Examples:

  • Growth

  • Courage

  • Friendship

  • Confidence

  • Determination

Students can explain their word through writing, discussion, or visual representation.

5. End-of-Year Student Interviews

Partner students and have them interview one another using structured questions.

Examples:

  • What was your proudest accomplishment?

  • What was your favorite learning experience?

  • What advice would you give next year's students?

This activity provides meaningful speaking and listening practice while encouraging reflection.

6. Academic Growth Celebration

Help students recognize how much they have grown throughout the year.

Students can compare:

  • Beginning and end-of-year writing samples

  • Reading growth

  • Vocabulary development

  • Speaking confidence

  • Academic goals

Multilingual learners often benefit from seeing just how much progress they have made.

7. Summer Learning Bucket List

Invite students to create goals for summer learning.

Ideas may include:

  • Read books at home

  • Visit the library

  • Keep a journal

  • Practice a home language

  • Learn new vocabulary

  • Explore a new hobby

This helps students maintain a growth mindset beyond the school year.

8. Classroom Time Capsule

Have students contribute:

  • Favorite memory

  • New vocabulary word

  • Writing sample

  • Goal for next year

  • Advice for future students

Store the items in a class time capsule to be opened in the future.

Celebrating Growth Beyond Academics

For multilingual learners, the end of the school year is about more than academic achievement. It is an opportunity to celebrate growth in confidence, communication, language development, and identity.

When we intentionally create opportunities for reflection, discussion, and celebration, students leave the classroom recognizing how far they have come as learners, thinkers, and communicators.
